Near net-zero home at Third Cliff

CONTEXT:  The site is an existing 5000 SF lot in a dense waterfront neighborhood of Scituate overlooking Third Cliff.  The house is a year round home for a young family of four.  Energy modeling was used extensively to design the house to be a coste effective approach to net energy zero. The solar panels on the roof will provide +/- 75% of the heating, cooling and electrical load.  The design reflects the traditional shingle style in the neighborhood and orients all living East, toward the Atlantic.

RESPONSE:  The new structure is a simple 3 story home that maximizes views to the East while maintaining a small yard to the rear.  The front porch communicates with village streetscape, and the dramatic third floor deck commands a 180 degree view of the ocean.  ocated on the 2nd level focused out to take advantage of views to Nantucket Sound.  The four smaller bedrooms are located on the entry level. All are elevated to heighten the views beyond. Living areas on the first floor are open and inviting, and the 2nd floor bedrooms are light and airy. The 3rd floor office and bedroom with sloping ceilings create a dramatic space with dramatic views.
